How to convert MP3 to MIDI

The converter keeps the workflow deliberately simple: choose an audio file, let the browser transcribe the notes, then download an editable MIDI file. Nothing is uploaded to our server during transcription.

    Choose your audio

    Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC, or WebM file into the converter. Short, clean recordings with a clear instrument usually produce the easiest MIDI to edit. The current browser version supports files up to five minutes and 100 MB.

    Transcribe and clean the notes

    Basic Pitch analyzes the audio locally and estimates note pitches and timing. Our post-processing removes very short fragments, merges same-pitch overlaps, corrects model latency, and can restore repeated piano attacks. You can preserve the performance timing or quantize the result to a grid.

    Download and edit the MIDI

    Download the generated .mid file and open it in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Reaper, GarageBand, or another MIDI-capable DAW. MIDI stores notes and timing rather than the original sound, so you can change tempo, instruments, note lengths, velocity, and arrangement.

What to expect from audio-to-MIDI conversion

Audio and MIDI describe music in very different ways. An MP3 is a recording of sound pressure over time, while MIDI is a sequence of note events, velocities, channels, and timing instructions. Converting between them is therefore a transcription problem rather than a simple file-format change. The model has to infer which notes were played, when they started, and how long they lasted.

Clean melodies are easier than dense mixes

A solo piano line, guitar melody, bass phrase, humming voice, or isolated instrument generally gives the transcription model clearer evidence than a mastered song containing vocals, drums, bass, pads, reverb, and several instruments at once. Polyphonic piano can work well because the pitches are stable, but complex mixes may create extra notes from harmonics or miss quiet notes hidden under louder sounds. For the cleanest editable result, start with the least crowded source you have. If you own stems, an isolated instrument stem is usually a better input than the full mix.

The MIDI is meant to be edited

The generated file should be treated as a useful starting point, not a perfect score of the recording. The converter automatically removes tiny note fragments and same-pitch overlaps, and it offers optional quantization to make piano-roll editing easier. Even after cleanup, you may want to delete an incorrect note, split or join a note, adjust velocity, change the tempo grid, or separate melody and accompaniment into different tracks. That is normal for automatic transcription and is exactly why MIDI output is useful: every detected note remains editable.

Preserve timing or straighten it to a grid

Human performances rarely stay at one mathematically exact tempo. A pianist may slow down at the end of a phrase or push slightly ahead of the beat. Preserve Performance keeps those timing differences, while Quantize can snap note starts to 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 divisions. Quantizing note endings is optional because it changes note lengths as well as starts. For expressive recordings, preserving timing is often safer. For loops, electronic music, or material you plan to edit heavily in a DAW, quantization can make the result much easier to work with.

Local processing is the privacy boundary

Your selected audio is decoded and analyzed in the browser on your own device. The transcription model is downloaded when needed, but the recording itself is not sent to our application server for conversion. This matters for unfinished songs, client recordings, rehearsal takes, demos, and other audio you may not want to upload to a third-party conversion service. Browser performance still depends on your device, available memory, and browser support, which is why the first release uses a five-minute limit rather than pretending every phone or laptop can process arbitrarily large recordings.
